Is Makeup Essential for an Underwater Photoshoot in a Cenote? Tips for a Natural or Glam Look

Makeup for an underwater photoshoot

In traditional photoshoots, makeup is the focal point, but when you go underwater, you might wonder: Is makeup even necessary? I understand that capturing your beauty is a priority, so this blog post is here to answer all your questions and provide valuable recommendations.

  • Embrace Your Natural Beauty: Let's start with the good news—for underwater photoshoots, there's no pressure to wear a full face of makeup! Capturing your raw, natural beauty in a breathtaking underwater environment can be a truly empowering experience. It's a chance to embrace yourself exactly as you are, and the photos will radiate confidence and authenticity. Since underwater photos tend to focus more on the big picture and wide-angle shots, you don't need to go overboard with makeup. This can be an opportunity to embrace the natural beauty of the moment!

  • But don't feel limited! While the natural look is stunning, the choice is ultimately yours. The next section of this blog will explore some makeup options for those who prefer a touch of enhancement underwater.

Underwater makeup tips

For underwater photoshoots, there's no pressure to wear a full face of makeup!

Doing an underwater photoshoot shouldn't mean saying goodbye to your signature look. Here are a few mermaid-worthy tips to help you look absolutely stunning:

  • Waterproof makeup is a must! This is non-negotiable for a flawless underwater look.

  • Don't be afraid to go bold! Think vibrant colors that pop underwater, like a classic red lip or shimmery, mermaid-inspired eyeshadow. These will really help you stand out.

  • Setting spray is your secret weapon! A good setting spray will keep everything in place, even when you're submerged.

Do you want to know where to find the best makeup for an underwater photoshoot?

Check out our essential kit for conquering your underwater photoshoot with makeup that actually stays put:

  • Primer: Start with a waterproof Primer to create a smooth canvas and ensure your makeup stays locked in place, no matter how many bubbles you blow.

  • Eye shadow: Equip yourself with an eye shadow primer and waterproof eyeliner (pencil or liquid; the choice is yours!) to create an amazing look that will last.

  • Flawless Finish: A Waterproof Foundation. This formula provides coverage without feeling heavy. I've heard that a foundation is all the mermaid's favorite.

  • Seal the Deal: A magic secret! This eyeliner sealant will transform your favorite eyeshadows into waterproof warriors. This handy product ensures your artistry stays vibrant throughout your shoot.

  • Final touch: Complete your look with this on-til-dawn Makeup Setting Spray for a long-lasting result. An extra layer of protection ensures your makeup stays put.

Bonus Beauty: While not strictly waterproof, a long-lasting lipstick like this Urban Decay can add a touch of color and confidence to your underwater look.

We recommend skipping glitter and other non-biodegradable products

Don’t forget that we are shooting in a delicate ecosystem. A touch of waterproof makeup can enhance your beauty, but we recommend skipping glitter and other non-biodegradable products. Let your natural radiance and the stunning underwater environment take center stage in your photos. After all, the truest form of beauty is often the simplest.

Can I wear a wig for my underwater photoshoot? Absolutely!

Wearing a wig underwater is totally possible, but securing it properly is key! Here's how to make sure your wig stays put:

  • Prep your skin: Start with a clean, dry forehead. Rubbing alcohol will remove any oils and ensure better adhesion.

  • Apply waterproof wig glue: Apply a thin layer of waterproof wig glue along your hairline. For extra security, especially for more active underwater shoots, apply a second layer after the first has dried (you can use a hairdryer on a cool setting to speed up the drying process).

  • Secure with pins: After applying the glue, use wig pins for extra reinforcement, especially around the forehead and temples.

  • Keep the hair in place: To keep the wig hair looking sleek and prevent it from floating everywhere, we recommend using Tigi Bed Head Hair Stick (or a similar strong-hold wax stick).

  • From your skin: Use a wig glue remover to gently dissolve the adhesive. Follow up with a gentle shampoo to remove any residue.

  • From your wig: After removing the wig, use a small brush dipped in wig glue remover to carefully clean any remaining glue from the inside front of the wig.

Important Considerations

  • Wig type: Synthetic wigs tend to hold up better underwater than human hair wigs, as they don't absorb as much water.

  • Practice: We highly recommend practicing securing and wearing your wig in a controlled environment (like a bathtub or pool) before your actual photoshoot.
