Escondido

The Escondido series explores the profound connection between humans, each other, and the natural world through the lens of underwater photography. Captured in the serene, ethereal environment of Mexican cenotes, these photographs strip away the external markers that define us, revealing a deeper sense of unity and interdependence.

In many of the images, the subjects—both women and men—are depicted naked, symbolizing vulnerability and the universality of the human experience. By removing societal distinctions, these figures embody a raw, timeless truth: beneath the surface, we are all interconnected with each other and the environment that sustains us.

While the series features moments of stillness, much of Escondido is dynamic, with the subjects moving fluidly through the water. These movements mirror the ebb and flow of life itself, reinforcing the notion that harmony can be found in both motion and quietude. The water, as both a medium and a metaphor, invites the viewer to consider the invisible threads that bind us—not only as individuals but as part of a broader ecosystem.

Shot entirely underwater, the series relies on the freediving abilities of both the photographer and the subjects, with no scuba equipment involved. This choice emphasizes the intimate connection between the participants and the environment, reinforcing the series’ central theme of interdependence.

The Escondido series is a call to reflect on balance—between individuals, within society, and between humanity and the Earth itself.
